THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF LIFE?

Lacking substance in their own platform and hoping to replicate
their semi-successful hijacking of national security from
conservatives, Democrats have set their sights on another
traditionally conservative issue: The right to life.

This week, pro-life Congressman Lincoln Davis (D-TN)
introduced the Pregnant Women Support Act, which aims to
reduce abortion rates by offering assistance to pregnant women
and new mothers. Just last week, Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH)
introduced legislation focused on abortion reduction through
contraception. Not to be outdone, NARAL ally and salad-bar Catholic
John Kerry (http://PatriotPetitions.US/kerry/)
(D-MA) has called for both sides to end partisan bickering and
come together. "Instead of making enemies," Kerry entreated,
"we need to make progress." Kerry's idea of progress? Let's keep
killing the unborn at taxpayer expense, but let's (wink, wink)
try not to do it so often.

These sudden initiatives come as public interest in abortion has
waned and most conservatives have all but abandoned the issue as a
political no-win. And although the Democratic Party has not before
seen fit to tout Davis' pro-life position, this may soon change.

Lest you think the Democratic Party has become the party of life,
however, note the timing of these epiphanies. With mid-term
elections weeks away, political grounds are fertile for testing
which issues will provide electoral mileage in 2008. If abortion
tests well, we may witness an election-year revival of the
issue. If the trial balloon loses air, however, just watch how
quickly these newfound "convictions" yield to political expedience.
