Ben Lewandowski says he was only trying to be patriotic when he wore a
homemade T-shirt featuring an American flag bumper sticker and the
words "Remember 9/11" to Lincoln Park High School on Monday.

After all, it was Sept. 11 -- five years after the terrorist attacks.

The 17-year-old Lincoln Park resident put the shirt on Monday morning
and headed to school -- where he was quickly sent to the office and
suspended for three days for violating the school's dress code.

And he would have been sent home (he was suspended because it was his second
time) if he had been wearing an anti Busch shirt.

As a staunch supporter of free speech, I think this rule is ridiculous.

As someone who supervises stores in malls and shopping centers, I almost
understand. I still don't agree with it, but I kinda understand. It's a
"zero tolerance" type thing to keep slogan shirts out of schools.

Some examples:
a shirt featuring the Warner's logo with the words,"If you see a cop, Warn a
Brother"

"Your boyfriend left this shirt in my bedroom"

"Stop Snitching."

"Your Mom's hot"

Unfortunately, to keep this "brilliance" out of the schools, no shirts can
have slogans.

But you know what?
I would have tested it, and if I had been sent home I'd have made a few
phone calls.
I know, I did it when I was 17.
