SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California filed suit against Ford Motor
Co., General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp.
and three other carmakers on Wednesday, charging that greenhouse gases
from their vehicles have cost the state
millions of dollars.
State Attorney General Bill Lockyer said the lawsuit filed in U.S.
District Court in Northern California was the first of
its kind to seek to hold manufacturers liable for the damages caused
by their vehicles' emissions.
The lawsuit also names Chrysler Motors Corp., the U.S. arm of
Germany's DaimlerChrysler, and the North American
units of Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.

Like this is going to really work. California sets the emission levels
that are allowed from vehicles not the manufacturer. California will
have to prove that the auto manufacturers have been wilfully exceeding
California emission standards.

California of course has the option of banning the sales of vehicles
in the state.

me wherever I am or whatever I do. -- EPICTETUS

Something tells me that you would be farther up the priority list if they
ever really got around to banning morons, Travis.

If I were a car maker, I'd sue right back for California's having an
idiot Attorney General and a cyborg Governor.

There's too much money at stake in the CA market for the auto makers to
abandon it. So if the CA suit is successful - and even if it isn't -
the costs involved will simply be passed along to the CA consumer,
making the already unbelievable price of a new car even higher.

Here are some things that government has forced the automakers to put on
cars, that have raised the cars prices significantly:
1. SMOG equipment
2. Seat belts
3. Airbags (suspenders AND a belt)
4. Impact resistant bumpers
5. Impact resistant doors
6. Safety glass
7. Child-proof latches

But the government still has not addressed the most vital of all safety
equipment, except superficially - the nut on the steering wheel.

Buddy, look at that list. There is not an item on it I would remove. You
don't know enough about traffic safety to know that each one improves the
others. Making safe cars had to be in the law, now companies like Volvo are
selling big time because they build safe cars. Air bags and curtains work,
the insurance people have proved that again and again.

There's no question that safety is a good thing. But I'd much prefer to
see some real driver's training BEFORE that license to drive is issued.

As it happens, when I drive, I turn the radio off and don't use the cell
phone, eat, or read the paper. As a result, I haven't had either an
accident or a ticket since 1964, when I got caught speeding on a
motorcycle in Golden Gate Park in SF. Can you - or anyone in your
family show the same safety record of 42 years without a ticket or accident?

It's the _driver_; not the car.
