Republicans Move To Ban Internet Gambling

The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act recently passed in the Republican
controlled Senate and had already passed in the Republican controlled
House of Representatives. President Bush is expected to sign it into
law. And that's wrong because according to a recent poll 74% of
Americans don't want internet gambling banned. There's an estimated
70,000,000 Americans who play poker alone, according to the Poker
Players Alliance, which has over 110,000 members. Isn't this supposed
to be a democracy, where the majority of people decide things? Isn't it
supposed to be a government "of, by, and for the people?" Aren't we
supposed to have the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness?" But the Republicans don't care. They're always representing
wealthy special interests, in this case the National Football League,
against the interests of the majority of our people. Awhile ago it was
the Medicare Reform Act, which was written by the drug companies and
has actually resulted in costing more while providing less to the
recipients. The difference is a huge windfall right into the pockets of
the greedy drug companies. Even former Republican Speaker of the House
Newt Gingrich admitted this Medicare Reform has been a "disaster." If
we re-elect these guys in November they're going to be right after
Social Security again. The Bible says "Honor thy father and mother,"
and President Bush's plan certainly doesn't do that. President Bush
admitted his plan "won't hurt you if you're already retired." But
apparently it would hurt everyone else. It's time we stopped allowing
these guys to rip off the American public to benefit wealthy special
interests. Vote straight Democrat in the upcoming election. See

Internet gambling is legal in Canada, Australia, England, France,
Israel, even Russia. Why shouldn't it be legal in "the land of the free
and the home of the brave?"

Because Republicans like to outlaw fun.

Isn't this supposed to be a democracy,
No.

The US is NOT a Democracy. It is a REPUBLIC.

Revist your government textbooks to learn the difference.

(or simply look at the Pledge of Allegiance: "to the Replulic for which
is stands")

Mind you, I agree with your point, that this is a very bad bill and should
be stopped. But you would probably be more effective if you didn't appear
to be ignorant of our government type in your argument.

Nonsense. By all reasonable uses of the term, America is a Democracy.

Think about this: The USSR was a Republic. The UK is a Monarchy. Which
country does America most resemble?

Further: Name me one Democracy according to your definition of the term.

Revist your government textbooks to learn the difference.
Textbooks that make a big deal of that imagined difference are pedantic
far beyond what the English language AS IT IS USED will allow. In short,
they are wrong.

The Pledge is not a very useful document. It does not stand against the
mountains of common usage that proclaim America is a Democracy.

Plus, weren't WWI and WWII fought to make the world safe for Democracy?

You appear more ignorant than he does on this matter.
