i'm about to ditch my current ISP and go with one with no NNTP.
before this tragedy, anyone know of a good, free Usenet
server/access?
MY ISP did that a couple of years ago. Aioe.org satisfies my needs.
Free. It is limited. No binary groups. Max 25 posts per day. Etc.
Using Aioe for a few years, I've never hit these limits.
However, there's another one, which is no more than 3 newsgroups
per Newsgroups: and Followup-To:. And that's the reason I
occasionally use Eternal September, too.
But you don't have to register or give personal info or e-mail
address. Total anonymous. Quick and easy set up.
Seconded.
However, because it's an "open" server, I suggest you use SSL for
access to protect your system privacy.

"Open" was a poor word choice. "Public" would be more apropos. Very
public. And with little security, too, since no registration, user name,
password, etc. are required for access. That can leave your personal
system vulnerable to hacking through aioe. Somewhere in aioe's docs, it
suggests using SSL, if your newsreader is capable. Better safe than
sorry.
